Understanding Do Follow & No Follow Backlinks
Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 7:00PM
Back links are important for improving a web site's rank in the search engines (such as Google and Yahoo), because essentially, every back-link can count as a "vote" towards the popularity of a site. When a website has lots of other web pages linking to it, the search engines assume that the site must be important and relevant. Therefore, the site has a greater likelihood of appearing higher up on the search engine results page.
Back links can usually be categorized in two different ways, as do follow and no follow backlinks. Many bloggers, web masters, and internet marketers get confused when trying to distinguish between these two types of back-links. Both, when clicked, will direct the browser to the destination website, which is often referred to in the anchor text. However, do follow and no follow links are both treated differently by the search engines, Google in particular.
Do-follow links are back links which DO help to raise a site's ranking. The search engine will essentially count each of these links as a "vote". The more powerful the specific links are, the better the site will rank in the search engines. Therefore, it's usually better to have ten or twenty of these links from important, authority sites, rather than to have five hundred from weak web sites with a low page rank.
No-follow back links are also actual, click-able links, and the search engines recognise that they exist, but they do NOT count towards improving a web site's rank. Some forums and websites only support these kinds of links. Therefore, it's important when building back links to check which kinds each web site provides. However, it's important to remember that any kinds of back links are basically intended for the same thing: to bring more traffic to a site, in some way or another. Even though certain kinds do not help to improve a site's page rank, they can still help to drive traffic, if they are posted in a place where lots of people will see them and click on them.
The best thing to do when trying to drive traffic to a site is to concentrate first on the quality of the do follow and no follow backlinks, and then on the potential visibility and traffic that each link provides. Another thing to remember is that using anchor text for specific keywords is usually better than choosing phrases at random. Having a linking strategy which combines these two qualities can ultimately help to bring more targeted visitors to the destination site.
